DHH 2 is the section of the Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH) responsible for fulfilling its primary role of researching and writing official histories of the Canadian Forces and Department of National Defence. In addition to producing official histories, DHH 2 is tasked from time to time with the research and writing of commemorative histories to mark significant milestones in Canadian military history and other historical studies which will be useful to official historians in the future.

Other Ongoing Projects

NDHQ reports: a series of historical monographs on discrete operations and policies written as the need arises. They include to date studies of assistance to civil authorities in Canada (disaster relief), peacekeeping operations in Latin America, and militia reorganization.

DHH Historical Research Centre

The Directorate of History and Heritage maintains an Archives and Library section to support the research and writing of official histories. These resources are both available to the general public and Online.

Historical Inquires

DHH 2 is also responsible for answering questions on the history of the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence.

The Inquiries staff answers about 1,000 questions of an historical nature each year. As you will understand, although we will do our best to provide an answer or guide you to other departments or agencies better placed to provide an answer, the more precise your question the better we can deal with it.

In some cases, we may have to refer you to already published materials: for example, a question like "What did Canada do during the Second World War" cannot be answered briefly by our staff; but we will try to suggest books or that you visit your local library.

We accept questions in written form only, either by mail or by fax. Our specialty is modern military history (post 1867).
