Context
Canada is hosting the inaugural Trilateral Meeting of North American Defence Ministers, in Ottawa on March 26-27, 2012.
The Trilateral Meeting is hosted by the Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Peter Mackay who is joined today by the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Leon E. Panetta, the Mexican Secretary of National Defence, General Guillermo Galván Galván; and the Mexican Secretary of the Navy, Admiral Mariano Francisco Saynez Mendoza. Ministers also took this opportunity to hold individual bilateral meetings on the margins of the Trilateral. The Trilateral agenda focusses on counter-narcotics, illicit trafficking, North American defence and security challenges, hemispheric defence cooperation, and the support role of defence in humanitarian assistance and disaster response and in efforts to counter transnational organized crime. A brief media availability will conclude the event on March 27.
